My eyes were glued to the where Malone and Brandon were fighting as the smoke from the fire thickened after the gun shot sounded. Everything inside of me was screaming to run and get as far away from this place as possible, and yet, I couldn't. Brandon's dads' words kept running through my mind over and over again. Unsure of who had shot the gun, my eyes darted to Ashby for a split second as he stood there, breathing heavily as they glared at one another. Before his dad suddenly moved and held up one of the petrol cans I had kicked when I had moved a second ago and then violently began to pour the liquid inside of it all over the place. Including the two lifeless bodies tied to the chairs. Were they really dead? They couldn't be. None of this felt real. How was this happening right now?
Marilyn's long red hair looked almost black from the liquid that had been poured on her head. I wanted to move to her, but I couldn't move a muscle. The flames flickering in the distance seemed to be getting closer, but all I felt was cold. Icy cold to my very core. I had never expected anything like this to happen.
Everything I was seeing right now was happening purely for the fact that Ashby had gone to the man who was half of the reason he existed. All because of her. Nala was at the centre of all of this. Everything, almost everything that had happened these last few months⦠her disappearance was at the very core of it all. Nala Reeves was poison. Even when she was no longer here, that poison was wreaking havoc.
"This is all on your head Ashby" Brandon's father was shouting as he continued to pour petrol around the room as Ashby seemed to be frozen on the spot. The flames in the distance were spreading and would be getting closer and closer before we knew it. Throwing down one of the petrol cans, he grabbed another that I hadn't seen while I chanced looking around the room for an escape. What had happened with Maxi? He should have been back in here by now if he was getting help. If. Malone seemed to butt heads with the old man; maybe there was something else there that I didn't know but as well because what I did know of The Unholy Confessions. They didn't abandon their family, especially not in a moment like this one.
Covering my mouth with my forearm, my eyes widened; there was too much smoke now as the flames began to rapidly spread. I needed to get us the hell out of here and get some fresh air. I needed to get Malone and get the hell out of here. That is what I needed to do. My eyes landed back on Ashby, who looked broken. The lightness I had once seen in his eyes was gone, and he looked about as broken as I felt on the inside.
